Cello worked locally with MSD through their Mana in Mahi programme to establish a partnership that would provide candidates with a career path that would not have previously been an option.
The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) have the largest talent portfolio in the country however few businesses turn to them for recruitment candidates.
Despite incentives being available and career pathways or opportunities within the Mana in Mahi programme, businesses continue to look at traditional methods of recruitment despite their being significant skills and labour shortages in all industries. Vulnerable youth within industries that have a highly publicised lack of available talent.
MSD and Cello are no strangers to collaboration, neither organisation was starting from scratch, so traction was easily established given both organisations understood the opportunities and what was possible.
We created a framework tailormade to meet industry needs while being mindful of the potential candidate and understanding and agreeing on what their success would look like from their perspective.
Two months on we are delighted to announce we have successfully employed four pilot candidates into Cello.
Through the Mana in Mahi program, we hold high hopes of their successful journey within the Tech Industry. When we consider the diverse backgrounds of the four candidates, the challenges they would have ordinarily faced in terms of simply getting a response to a job application, it was important for us that they felt they would be nurtured from day one, immersed in a strong organisational culture, and respected as valued colleagues.
MSD have key existing relationships with Cello so when they reached out it was not only an endorsement of our Mana in Mahi program, but also an acknowledgement that Cello are heavily invested in the community and its most vulnerable people.
Throughout this partnership we pushed one another to ensure the focus remained outside the traditional approach to recruitment, training, and development, to co- create a feasible framework that ultimately would deliver the best chances of success.
What was obvious was the enthusiasm that Cello has in everything they do, and in this engagement, the energy, and effort was demonstrated throughout, and any unexpected problems or challenges were all handled with relative ease.
While the Mana in Mahi program has been in place for some time, our dealings with Cello showed what was possible when an organisation values inclusiveness and support for their people from the very beginning. One standout was how Cello used their partnerships to leverage some key global vendors as well as local partners to provide meaningful training and support to ensure the success of not only this initial group of candidates but subsequent future inductions of new employees.
These weren’t lengthy engagements, by simply picking up the phone and explaining what they were looking to achieve, an approach that was responded to swiftly and favourably.
This is a great success story and one we want to leverage internally. Mana in Mahi helps businesses employ staff who are training for a career and success stories like this, help create momentum. The team at Cello have kindly offered to speak at our service centres/regional meetings not only within MSD but also their partner community about an opportunity that links our community and is often overlooked.
Working with Cello, it was immediately apparent how invested they were in the Mana in Mahi program, their intent, and a genuine desire to help create opportunities in an industry that is struggling to find skilled labour.
When quizzed on why this is so important to Cello, the immediate response was that Cello have adapted to the current workforce challenge, and with the level of passion and progressive thinking they have demonstrated we look forward to watching the candidates grow personally and professionally at Cello and celebrate a fantastic partnership going forward.
